LEVEL 1/2
Introduction to the water, aimed to build water confidence, teaching children to travel with and without aids. Skills such as submerging with eyes open and floating are also covered. Progression to Level 3 is achieved when the swimmer is able to travel 5m on the front and back and pass Levels 1 and 2.
LEVEL 3/4
To develop a sound foundation for a good swimming technique as well as being completely “at home” on and under the water. Progression to Level 5 is achieved when the swimmer can travel 10 metres on front and back, using their arms and legs and pass Levels 3 and 4.
LEVEL 5/6
The focus is now on building basic elements of propulsion, using the main swimming strokes. Aquatic skills such as treading water, sculling and swimming underwater are introduced. Progression to Level 7 is achieved when the swimmer can swim 10 m of front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke, with regular breathing and pass Levels 5 and 6.
LEVEL 7/8
A consolidation of all skills previously learned. Butterfly is taught as well as the correct turns for all four strokes. Progression to Level 9 is achieved when the swimmer can swim 25 m of front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke (with appropriate breathing and correct turns) and
10 m butterfly and pass Levels 7 and 8.
LEVEL 9/10
This course develops more efficient swimming and introduces the pace clock. The swimmer will be taught to swim all four strokes smoothly and with control. To pass Level 10 swimmers will need to demonstrate technically correct movement patterns on the two strokes over 50 metres and on the other two strokes over 25 metres. Progression to Level 11 is achieved when the swimmer can swim 150 metres, showing technically correct and efficient strokes and turns and pass Level 10.
LEVEL 11/12
An introduction to competitive swimming training, using kick boards, pull buoys and pace clocks. Timed swims and understanding sessions are also covered. The swimmer will benefit at school level and can enter a club training environment or go on to do other activities.
